How to Play
Four to six players roll dice and move around a colorful, laminated board (or 4-6 teams
move around vinyl board) trying to avoid four traps: Ethnocentricity, Stereotypes, Bias,
Assimilation* The game leads participants from Ethnocentricity (the starting spot) to
wisdom about others (the DIVERSOPHY spot) while they collect the dividends (diversiCOINs)
of providing appropriate services for and caring for diverse patients successfully.
Participants face four kinds of challenges:
DivisiSMARTS cards develop players' knowledge of documented facts about ethnic
groups and their healthcare beliefs, behaviors, and expectations
DiversiCHOICE cards ask them the best way to handle encounters with patients of
different cultures and backgrounds along with helping them to understand others' values
and behavior styles
DiversiSHARE cards invite players to discuss their own cultural norms and
experiences about healthcare and how they would handle challenging intercultural issues
and encounters
DiversiRISK cards allow them to experience the challenges and hazards inherent
in providing healthcare to diverse patient groups
DiversiGUIDE cards offer practical advice on how to handle sensitive
communication issues with patients whose comprehension of English and the US healthcare
system is limited
*The Conference Multiplay version excludes these traps and changes player
competition from collecting diversiCOINs to scoring diversiPOINTs.
